Sent to a friend[771] Andrews University - Cheap with Dorm
Andrews University Michigan has neglected its dorms. Burman Hall the last dorms that was built was built in 1981.Andrews has 3 dorms Lamson for the women and Meier Hall for the men and Burman. Lamson was built in the 40 almost 70 years ago and Meier hall was built around 1964 almost 40 years ago. The university enrollment hasn't gone anywhere. In other words it hovers around 3000 students.
Complaints.
1) Meier hall is outdated and needs to be torn down and replaced.
2) Meier hall needs an elevator and better security but it is an x shaped 8 pointed disaster which was designed in the 60s and like sendmail is impossible to make secure.
3) Meier hall is not secure and anyone can enter it even non students and stealing happened as well.
4) Burman Hall was built for the Graduate students and placed 150 feet away from Meier. It's almost like the University put it as far away as they could from Meier and then neglected the undergraduate dorm which hasn't changed in 50 years.
5) The university was unprofessional and unhelpful and not supportive. They don't spend any money on the dorms and then the University involuntarily assigned a room mate twice or prosecute students. They only provide 4 to 10 parking spots in the back of Burman Hall. The University uses the police to prosecute the students and the Berrien Springs Police harass the Andrews male students and are also unprofessional. It almost like the University has given the male students a bad reputation with the police.
5a) You get what you pay for. Good dorms really build up university enrollment. If you have a good dorm what does a bad dorm do? A bad dorm such as Meier and Burman lowers student standards and decreases enrollment. Andrews Enrollment has gone nowhere the past 30 years.
6) The head dean of the dorms was totally incompetent and didn't really support the students by attempting to improve the dorms or ask for additional funding to make the dorms more accessible or friendly or even promote rebuilding Meier Hall. The head dean made a group of students stop playing a card game because the poker cards were considered demonic or something.
6a) One of the RAs cussed one of the students out which illustrates that the University is unprofessional with managing the Mens dorms.
6b) The womens dorm was a lot more professionally designed and run. The University was able to attract a Miss America contestant. The male recruitment is somewhat lacking since the University doesn't have a national sports program and spends nothing on the mens dorms which were already outdated 20 years ago.
7) The University miniscule tiny dorm rooms in Burman or chicken cages. They are about 15 by 15 feet and if you share a room mate it is terrible.
8) They also force students to move out of Meier and walk 150 feet away during the summer down three flights of steps and cart all of there belongings to the other dorm. This is so that Meier can be used as a conference center.
The University used a 10 million dollar donation to fund a stable for the cows in the University farm. Instead of improving the University 40+ year old mens dorms they "gave the money to the cows." The cows were more important than the mens dorms.
Other universities are improving the security of their dorm by adding keyless locks and improving the rooms and electrical wiring and the university did nothing to improve the dorms even though they charge 15000 per year.
This is a snippet from cnn.com.
http://www.cnn.com/2003/EDUCATION/11/28/dorm.overload.ap/index.html
"Andrew Matthews, of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International, said many dorms were built in the 1950s and 1960s and don't have the electrical capacity for power-dependent students."
Ohio state spent 200 million to renovate their dorms and Andrews has no priority in renovating Meier Hall or Burman.

I'm just wondering if he's done with his ranting.....so I can clean up the thread!
FWIW, it only cost me 10K per year, to send my little darling to a State University....and that includes living off campus in a one bedroom loft townhouse with two bathrooms, fireplace and even a small enclosed patio! At roughly the same cost as an on-campus dormatory room with forced roomate and the required food service plan. Why would anyone wish to live in a dorm is beyond my reasoning powers.
FWIW, Texas Tech hasn't built a dormatory in 35 years.....and I think the only kids who use them, are the dumb little sexy coeds from Dallas, who drive their new cars over here, and plan to PARTY. My son, once went to Basketball Camp at Texas Tech, when he was about 13....crummy little rooms, and those were in the NEWER dorms, 13 stories and elivators! Tech has stated that they eventually plan on getting OUT of the Dorm business......treating young adults as they should be treated. My thought about the 2 year rule....is that they want to fill up the Dorms...to pay them off! I'll give you a for instance, kid I know, rents a 3 bedroom townhouse for $900 a month......splits the rent with two other students...and they have their own place, nice 3-2-2 with even a yard for his Rotty.
They still have the first two year requirement of living in the Dorm, att Texas Tech.....and that usually aplies to the daddies little angels from Dallas (don't plan on driving on I-20, 340 miles...on a weekend when Tech is going back into session.............it's one line of brand new cars....all the way to the Tech Campus! And everybody yacking on their cell phones!) (Aboline makes a lot of money, on those weekends.....passing out speeding tickets!) The local kids do their first two years down the road at the local Jr. College...then switch to Tech..but continue to live on their own in the community!
====================
Thanks for the censorship.
Andrews University feels has the attitude they can go a century between dorm renovations. Universities can't just depend on other private landlords to provide apartments. Either the University has to provide the housing or it has to depend on someone else. Ignoring the dorms is bad business.

"The three-story, wood frame structure will contain primarily four-bedroom, two-bath suites. The facility will include recreational areas, a commons building and additional parking,
The project budget of approximately $28.2 million includes $23.8 million for actual construction; $1.8 million for professional fees, $1.6 million for furniture, fixtures and equipment, $500,000 for administrative costs and $450,000 for contingency purposes."
Posted 1 year agoReport - More quotes from the article:
"The plan is designed to reshape the look and feel of the campus, providing a more student-friendly environment, according to a news release. While the university is about to begin building its newest dormitory, it also has plans to demolish three dorms on campus that are no longer used for housing.
The high-rise University Hall and smaller Runnels and Mayer halls, all of which are closed, are planned to be torn down. The Texas Tech board of regents should approve the demolition projects at its October meeting, Rallo said."
Posted 1 year agoReport - It's not Texas Tech that wants to "getting OUT of the Dorm business" this is more of the Andrews attitude that they don't want to be in the dorm business either building or remodeling them.
The University also didn't want to own apartments or be in the apartment business so they sold those as well.
Posted 1 year agoReport - Here's a link to the security at Andrews. Meier Hall had the security system removed after a student pulled to doors off one of the entrances in Meier with a truck.
http://www.vonduprin.com/app_school3.asp
Security Needs
The school has three dormitory buildings for single students, including Lamson Hall, a women's resi-dence, and two men's residences, Meier Hall and Burman Hall. Until recently, security at Lamson Hall was a "break glass in emergency" alarm box, and doors were staff-monitored. After seven o'clock at night, residents had to use the front entrance, the only one where someone was stationed at a desk. This was particularly inconvenient in the rain, when students would have appreciated being able to use a closer door. At the two men's buildings, even less was done. "The men's dorms had nothing," says Dave Wilber, Director of Plant Administration. "You could walk in and out of the end doors anytime of the day or night."
As a church college in a rural area, Andrews University would liked to have been exempt from burglaries and other security problems, but this was not always the case. As with any college, today's students bring expensive stereos, computers, cameras and other high-value, easily sold items to school, creating temptation unknown a generation ago. "One Christmas time, we had several thousand dollars worth of stereos, TVs and computers stolen out of rooms," Wilber explains. "There were four or five rooms in a row, and it looked like they went from one end to the other."

Posted 1 year agoReport - Andrews University paid for unprofessional services when they built Meier Hall.
Posted 1 year agoReport - The student that was trying to start a fire in Meier Hall was probably trying to burn Meier Hall down.
Posted 1 year agoReport - Andrews was very inconsistent with the dorms. Instead of making 3 consistent dorms which looked the same and creating a standard formula that works they built three one off buildings. Each of the dorms is different. Meier Hall is the bastard child of Lamson (Satans). The entrances for all three are different and the rooms are inconsistency.
Add some consistency AU.

Posted 1 year agoReport - This is a quote from spectrum magazine about the seminary student assault. I can't believe someone would print this.
"Seminarians have a less than stellar reputation at Andrews, which is justified. Seminarians have developed a reputation with the local police as notorious wife-beaters with frequent domestic violence spats in the married student housing on campus. The single Seminarians are notorious for preying on the undergrad girls and sleeping around with naïve victims. Don't get me wrong, the vast majority of Seminarians are good people, but there simply are way too many stories to not view it as a serious crisis."

Posted 1 year agoReport - The university was given a chance to respond to the first postings which any respectable organization would after the first comment.
Andrews spent 10 million on the PMC church (Cathedral) even though the men's dorms have been a security risk for 30 years and have poorly designed entrances with little regard for student happiness or satisfaction (I guess they don't care about the endowment). They should have at least shown commensurate funding for the mens dorms.
Private Universities can get away with more than public Universities as a religious organization which in Andrews case includes discriminating against the male students by not providing an adequate mens dorm. Meier Hall doesn't even have a TV lounge since the lobby doubles for it.
Another example is Liberty University where the Democratic Party club was decertified for political reasons.
NC State lists a TV lounge as a top feature in their dorms which Meier Hall fails to provide in addition to convenience or entertainment but if you want to lose your students be my "guest!!!!"

Posted 1 year agoReport - Meier Hall is not a symmetrical design.
A design definition of symmetry. http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Symetrical
"symmetry, generally speaking, a balance or correspondence between various parts of an object; the term symmetry is used both in the arts and in the sciences. In art and design, it is often used in a somewhat loose sense, to mean a kind of balance in which the corresponding parts are not necessarily alike but only similar. A symmetrical design should produce a pleasing effect;"
A definition of Meier Hall.
An improperly designed structure without a mail room and no understanding of student needs and who function is obsolete and contains imbalanced and poorly designed entrances that form together in a disastrous and collectively negative manner.

Posted 1 year agoReport - Andrews just made this announcement about the womens housing.
"The past school year saw a record-high enrollment. While this is a blessing, it brings some challenges for housing our single female students who desire residence-hall accommodations."
"Capacity planning efforts with the Division of Student Life, Lamson Hall and the Office of Family & Graduate Housing have been undertaken to prepare for yet another projected enrollment increase. Ten University-owned houses within walking distance of campus have been reserved and are being prepared to house some 50 single female students. These students will be over 22 years of age and interested in residing in Lamson Hall, but cannot due to space limitations. This option is open to both undergraduate and graduate female students who are 22 years of age or older. These ten homes are under the management of the Office of Family & Graduate Housing."

This press release translation is that the womens dorm is increasing enrollment and drawing more students than are available. This proves the fact the womens dorm Lamson was always a better dorm than Meier or Burman since neither men's dorm appears to be drawing students to capacity.
The university further comments that the men's dorms will continue to provide sufficient space. The reason is that the men's dorm suck in comparison and don't offer as much which means that the University isn't really increasing on campus enrollment for the men. It also is a statement that they have no intention of renovating the men's dorms.
"Enrollment projections indicate Meier and Burman Halls will continue to provide sufficient living space for our single undergraduate and graduate men who wish to live in a residence hall."

Inside the Tragic Fall of Ohio State's Elevator No. 2
The dormitory elevator, originally installed when the residence hall was built in 1959, received routine maintenance and yearly safety inspections by the state of Ohio, according to Shelly Hoffman, an OSU spokesperson. Inspection reports indicate that the elevator passed its last full-load test (taken every five years) in August 2003, but its static brakes failed in a test performed Oct. 23. A static brake holds an elevator at the floor, then stops the car when it settles on the floor. “They’re tested with the full elevator load plus 25 percent of the rated capacity to make sure the elevator will hold above and beyond its capacity,” says Nyborg.

“There is something breathtakingly condescending, as well as inhumane, about the sacrificing of anyone, especially children, on the altar of ‘diversity’ and the virtue of preserving a variety of religious traditions. The rest of us are happy with our cars and computers, vaccines and antibiotics. But you quaint little people with your bonnets and breeches, your horse buggies, your archaic dialect and your earth-closet privies, you enrich our lives. Of course you must be allowed to trap your children with you in your seventeenth-century time warp, otherwise something irretrievable would be lost to us: a part of the wonderful diversity of human culture. A small part of me can see something in this. But the larger part is made to feel very queasy indeed.”

Discrimination is offering one group something that the other group doesn't have. Discrimination comes in many flavors sex, age and disability.
With Meier Hall the University was supposed to provide (ideally) although this was circa 1964 the same level of building for Lamson as they did for Meier Hall. The University did not. Meier Hall has 1 lobby whereas Lamson has two lobbies and a larger front desk whereas Meier had a jack in the box cubicle for the Lobby. Meier Hall is x-shaped with 4 bad entrances also ugly entrances. Lamson has attractive entrances and is square shaped. Security is also enforced in Lamson whereas in Burman and Meier it is anything but. The University used Meier a pre fair housing act building as a hotel instead of building one. The problem with Meier is it also has 6 stairwells and lacked a mail room when it was built. Meier Hall was assymetrical and not a classical model dorm like Lamson.
On multiple occasions the University has passed up funding to fix the issues with Meier Hall and address the needs which are not limited to replacing those ratty ugly stair wells in Meier Hall.
The University has never disputed any of the comments on this site and probably can't because they can't defend themselves.

Actually at least the women in Lamson have better entrances than Meier Hall. Lamson is much more marketable and at least looks adequate on the outside. Meier Hall on the other hand has ugly concrete car garage style access wells with clunky metal doors and no sense of design and Meier doesn't even have a stone or brick entrance or mail room when built. Security is also inadequate in Meier Hall. I'm sure the guy that roomed in Meier enjoyed getting his laptop stolen. Compared to Ogden Hall at Miami University Meier Hall and Burman are slums.
Lamson might have it's flaws but it's not the x-shaped disaster Meier Hall is. Plus facts don't support your comment. AU has a undergrad gender ratio 12% higher for the women than men.
The last University press release stated that they can't house all the students in Lamson. Whereas Burman and Meier Hall are both sufficent (since they have stealing and tiny rooms and no TV lounge or rec room).
Maybe you should look at Ogden Hall in Miami University to see how a real entrance and not Meier Hall's entrances are designed. Andrews had a Miss America Contestant which is more than I can say for the men. The men at Andrews read like a police rap sheet with burglaries and seminary student teacher assaults and drinking and sleeping around.

You must not have been at Andrews where the students basically took a truck cable and pulled the doors off the front Meier Hall entrance. It was sitting on the ground 15 feet away.
The incident with the warez student was paraded prominently in the Andrews Student Movement as a prime example of reputation mismanagement and how the University uses students and men as the scapegoat instead of addressing the issues.

Discrimination is putting a 21 year old age limit on living in Burman Hall and then neglecting to update Meier Hall like Ohio State does or Miami University has done with Ogden.

The University hasn't been gung ho about rebuilding Meier Hall or spending millions to improve it. The University has shown nothing but reluctance in improving or remodeling that disaster of a building. When students started bringing modern electrical equipment in the 80s Meier Hall should have been renovated. It's funny how it wasn't.

You mean having to move between Meier and Burman which is 150 feet away and move all your books and tvs and stuff between dorms. This is difficult if you don't have a car. It's definitely shows a lot of thought(lessness).

The University has the attitude of constant unimprovement. They consistently do the same jig instead implementing continuous improvement. They think that selling the Model T for 50 years is acceptable.

Kaffee: I think I'm entitled.
Col. Jessep: *You want answers?*
Kaffee: *I want the truth!*
Col. Jessep: *You can’t handle the truth!*
[pauses]
Col. Jessep: Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.
Kaffee: Did you order the Code Red?
Col. Jessep: I did the job I...
Kaffee: *Did you order the Code Red?*
Col. Jessep: *You’re Goddamned right I did!*
- A Few Good Men
(At Andrews)
Posted 9 months agoReport - Southern University took the opposite track. They built a women's and men's dorm that were mirrors. They have adequate classic style entrances and both Talge and Thatcher Hall look the same unlike Andrews.
